After listening to a podcast of This American Life and a podcast from NPR I noticed significant differences. Personally, I enjoyed This American Life’s satirical podcast much more than I did listening to NPR’s more standard sounding news reports. On This American Life the podcast was titled “I Was So High.” What I liked about listening to this was it as all personal stories. People came on the show and were interviewed about experiences they had either regarding themselves, or people around them who were high. There wasn’t much censoring in what they could say it seemed like – however all cuss words were beeped out. It was very open and free for people to speak however they pleased. Also, the topic itself was very, you know, open. It wasn’t like it was about the effects of being high or even really the dangers of it, but a comedic way to discuss the effects being high had to the people in the stories in a very entertaining, satirical way. The opening to the story is a great attention grabber as well. At first it talks about the population of people who get high, which is astounding may I add, and some of there reasons for doing it. Through the rest of the podcast its talks about one on one stories involving people in high society – high up business men, as well as a debate between law enforcement and someone from Congress. I enjoyed the dialogue throughout the entire thing –  I like how people are interrupted and it’s so funny and intriguing that you want to listen. This American Life’s way of addressing topics keeps you extremely interested, and for that reason I enjoyed listening to it very much.

 When it came to NPR, I listened to a full show and I was just uninterested. Their way of reporting news was much more official and statistical. One of the parts of the news was about politics regarding the Republics Council in Russia. One minute it was talking about international politics, the next minute it was back to U.S. politics. There also wasn’t much of a dialogue in this podcast at all, which I didn’t care for. I felt like I couldn’t even really keep up because before I knew it, the reporter was talking about something else. I found it to be really boring and it was worse than watching news on TV. At least on TV there is some dialogue between the news anchors regarding the news, and this was just people talking at you really quickly to the point where I was lost if I stop listening for even a second. It was a typical news reporting radio, I just wasn’t interested in the way it reported and personally would much prefer to listen to podcasts like This American Life to NPR.
