In 1979, a 16-year-old boy walked onto a barren sandbar in the Brahmaputra River and found it covered in dead snakes. Floods had washed them ashore, and with no trees, no shade, nothing, they had baked to death in the sun.

He sat down and wept. Then came the thought that would consume the next 40 years of his life. Without trees, we die the same way.

So Jadav Payeng started planting. One sapling a day, alone, on a sandbar everyone else had written off. Bamboo first, then cotton trees, then anything that would take root in the sand and silt and flooding.

He did it for four decades. He lost count of the trees.
